Initiated by Alwena Shipping and in consortium with naval architecture firm VPLP Design and engineering firm SDARI, the Trade Wings 2,500 unveiled in 2021 is an innovative concept for a “small” 2,500 TEU container ship designed to meet 2050 greenhouse gas emission targets.
It features hybrid-electric propulsion (LNG and MGO), with six Oceanwings and azimuth thrusters, enabling a reduction in CO2 emissions of around 35% on the scale of an Atlantic crossing. Its engines are easily adaptable to cleaner alternative fuels (LNG, ammonia, hydrogen, etc.).
The wings can be retracted into the ship’s interior without interfering with commercial operations. The “elevator” system was developed by Alwena Shipping, VPLP Design and Oceanwings (formerly Ayro).
