In 2020, VPLP Design and Alwena Shipping began joint development of a 30-meter catamaran concept dedicated to passenger transport (tourist activities and offshore personnel transport). In 2021, Mer Concept, the mission-driven company founded by François Gabart, has joined forces with VPLP Design and Alwena Shipping to develop a 24-meter platform that is completely carbon-free, with batteries and hydrogen.
This ferry is capable of cruising at 45 knots, thanks to the use of foils. Its fuel consumption can be reduced by up to 40% compared with conventional hulls, while reaching speeds that rival helicopters or other fast means of transport.
